About the program:

The YTTL "Chovevei Torah" Semicha Program offers bochurim the opportunity to learn in a conventional yeshivah setting, while enjoying the specialized hadracha available in smaller, out-of-town semicha programs.

Talmidim in the program are empowered in the general study of Halacha, as they attain a thorough understanding of the complex halochos of Yoreh Deah studied for semicha.

The program boasts comfortable learning conditions, a nice dorm, good food, and most importantly a conventional yeshivah environment with a structured curriculum.

Harav Yosef Yitzchok Barber heads the program and serves as full-time mayshiv.

Rabbi Barber is an accomplished teacher and author of the popular study aid, Sayatta LeShulchan Aruch on Hilchos Melicha and Basar Bechalav.

Class size is limited to ensure individualized attention and hadracha.

The program is geared for serious yeshivah bochurim. Prospective talmidim must exhibit a sincere sense of yiras shomayim and commitment to their studies.

Daily Sedarim:

Sedarim are held in Beis Midrash Chovevei Torah, 885 Eastern Parkway, just one block from 770.

Daily sedarim follow the general schedule of Tomchei Temimim Yeshivos. A detailed schedule will be provided upon enrollment.

Wednesdays, there is an extended lunch break so bochurim can participate in the Release Time program.

Participants in the semicha class are expected to bring a sense of hasmada and sincerity to the Beis Midrash. There are no requirements per se with respect to the younger bochurim in zal.

Curriculum:

The course is scheduled to complete Hilchos Melicha, Basar Bechalav, and Taarovos by the conclusion of the school year.

In addition to the primary poskim — Tur, Beis Yosef, Mechaber, Rema, Taz, and Shach — participants also study sections of the Pri Megadim and other achronim where important issues are raised.

At the start of each zman, talmidim will receive a learning schedule detailing the material to be completed each week, including the projected date of completion for each section.

In addition to Hilchos Melicha, Basar Bechalav, and Taaruvos, there are two additional sections required in order to receive semicha: 1) Hilchos Maacholei Akum & Hechsher Keilim (YD Siman 112-122); 2) Hilchos Shabbos (Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch, Siman 253-259, 308-328).

Talmidim should allow about two to three months of preparation (independent study) for each of the two remaining sections, and contact Rabbi Barber to schedule a test.

Shiurim:

Shiurim provide background and context as talmidim are introduced to the unfamiliar concepts and complexities of Yoreh Deah.

Daily shiurim outline the sugya from its source in the Gemara, the various interpretations of the rishonim, down through the conclusion of the poskim.

Important issues raised by contemporary poskim as well as the practical application of the halachos are highlighted.

Helpful summaries, breaking down complex subjects in a unique format, are also provided. The handouts add much clarity and are a useful tool for chazara.
